Star Spangled Banner
After Vermont became a state in 1791 and Kentucky joined the nation in 1792, the 13 star flag no longer represented all of the states of the Union. Congress changed the basic design to 15 stripes and 15 stars. This version remained the national standard until 1818, and hung over Fort McHenry during the War of 1812 and inspired Francis Scott Key to write "The Star Spangled Banner." By 1818, five more states had joined the Union. Congress decided to go back to 13 stripes, and add a star for each new state.
Bennington Stars and Stripes
The original of this flag is in the Bennington Museum in Vermont. While tradition hold that it was carried at the Battle of Bennington in August 1777, the flag itself dates to the Colonial Revival period of the late 19th century. While there were numerous variations of the Stars and Stripes, no documented example dating from the Revolution included "76" in the canton.
