Join us October 13th for a keynote address from Lenore Zann.  A former Member of Canada's Parliament and the House of Commons, Ms. Zann spearheaded funding for the Black Loyalist Heritage Centre. The Centre and its museum explore the lives of Black Loyalists who left America to settle Birchtown in Nova Scotia at the end of the Revolutionary War.

Thousands of Black Loyalists evacuated New York City between April and November 1783–many of whom had previously been enslaved–the culminating event in one of the largest emancipations of Black people prior to the American Civil War. The Birch Trials at Fraunces Tavern, our latest permanent exhibition, highlights the cases of several of those Black Loyalists who appeared before a joint British and American commission at Fraunces Tavern–formed as part of the process to implement the peace–to defend their eligibility to evacuate. Ms. Zann will connect Birchtown in Nova Scotia back to the Birch Trials at the Tavern, linking these two sites in a profound way.

In addition, as an actress and the voice of Rogue from the X-Men comic series, Ms. Zann also exemplifies our current exhibition, Cloaked Crusader: George Washington in Comics and Pop Culture, which looks at 100 years of Washington in comic books and popular culture.

Joining Ms. Zann is the co-creator of Rogue, Michael Golden as well as Marvel Zombies artist Arthur Suydam, both of which have original art on display in the exhibition, among other surprise guests.

Cloaked Crusader: George Washington in Comics and Pop Culture, the new book by Renee Witterstaetter, will also be available for the first time anywhere on this night with Renee signing copies for those in attendance. Supplies may be limited, so order yours in advance.
